The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, full disclosure and accountable governance as panacea to sustainable growth in its operations..
The company’s Head, Global Compliance, Murjanatu Gamawa, said being accountable was part of its strategy to earn the trust and confidence of its shareholders, investors, partners and the Nigerian public in its quest to become a global energy company.
Gamawa, who led the Company’s delegation to the recently concluded 2026 Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Global Conference in Brussels, Belgium, stated this during a pre-conference session for State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) at the conference.
The panel session, which was sponsored by the World Bank Group, was on the theme: “SOE (State-owned enterprises) transparency in action: Systematic Disclosure for Accountable Resource Governance.”
In her presentation titled: “From Commitment to Practice: NNPC Ltd’s Transparency Journey”, Gamawa explained that the company took a deliberate decision to become an EITI-supporting company in 2020 not merely a regulatory obligation, but as a strategic commitment that aligned transparency with the corporate vision.
Such a decision, she pointed out, placed the company under the same EITI Company Expectations as other international oil, gas and mining companies that equally support the global transparency initiative.
Since enlisting as the EITI-supporting company that embraces the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance, she said the NNPC Ltd has consistently published its audited financial statements, beginning from 2020, which was the first time in 42 years since its inception.
She said the most recent of the audited financial statements published by the company was for the 2025 financial year, together with monthly performance reports and data on production, financials and operations.
“Our practical lesson is that transparency must become a routine part of how we operate,” she said.
Gamawa, who said NNPC Ltd is always ready to share its experience with other National Oil Companies (NOCs) around the world, also encouraged the NOCs to strive to partner and collaborate closely with their national multi-stakeholder working groups and the wider EITI network.
She said NNPC Ltd’s participation in the EITI Global Conference was a demonstration of its commitment to systematic disclosure as a practical model for strengthening State-Owned Enterprise governance and aligning resource management with national development priorities.
This year’s Conference, which was held under the theme “Transparency for Shared Prosperity”, brought together over 1,000 participants from governments, companies, civil society and development partners across more than 50 countries.
