To increase utilization of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). popularly called cooking gas, and reduce the risks associated with the use of firewood for cooking, the Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) wants more education and awareness for consumers, especially in rural areas, on the benefits.
Speaking at the National Oil Companies Forum on Day Three of the 7th Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES) in Abuja, the Company’s General Manager, Finance, Fatima Adanan, underscored the need for an extensive campaign to educate users of firewood and other forms of biomass on the benefits of changing to LPG for cooking in the market.
The primary goal of the education campaign, Adanan said, was to increase the population of LPG users in Nigeria, thereby altering the current energy mix and achieving deeper penetration of LPG.
She said the total market consumption of LPG in the country was about 1.5 million metric tons, with potential to increase exponentially if adequate awareness and education was done on the benefits.
The NLNG which supplies close to 500,000 metric tons of the commodity to help meet the market’s demand, has fulfilled its commitment to supply 100 percent of its LPG production to the domestic market.
Adanan highlighted that NLNG was doing everything within its power to make the product available at affordable prices by selling the LPG at a competitive price with payments made in Naira.
She said the Company was ready to work with other stakeholders to deepen LPG utilization and called on indigenous companies to participate actively by investing in the establishment of the distribution network and contribute to a robust value chain development.
She stressed that NLNG remained committed to promoting the adoption of cooking gas as a cheaper and more environmentally friendly cooking fuel, to protect consumers and the environment from the risks associated with alternative fuels, which align with the company’s environmental safety priorities.
