The reduced allocation of electricity to the distribution companies (DISCos) in recent times is as a result of the low generation capacity by the generation companies (GENCos) due to gas supply constraints, the Transmission Company of Nigeria TCN has said.
The TCN announced in a statement on Thursday in Abuja that there has been a gradual reduction in available electricity generation injected into the national grid due to gas supply constraints to the thermal generating companies.
The development, the General Manager, Public Affairs of TCN, Ndidi Mbah, said has impacted the quantum of bulk power available on the transmission grid for onward transmission to the distribution load centres nationwide.
Recent Factsheet published by the electricity regulator, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), about the operational performance of the 26 power plants connected to the national grid as at November 2023 showed that total electricity generated stood at about 3,167. 16 gigawatt hour (GWh) against an average availability capacity of 5,076.39 mega watts (MW), or 42 percent of the total grid installed capacity of about 12.199MW.
Mbah assured electricity consumers that the TCN was doing everything possible in collaboration with stakeholders in the power sector to ensure that it continues to keep the grid intact inspite of the current low power generated into the system .
Consequent, Mbah said upon the current load on the grid, load distributed to the distribution load centres have also reduced, as TCN can only transmit what is generated.
“TCN is committed to ensuring a gradual increase in electricity supply to load centres as gas supply improves to power available thermal plants.
She urged consumers to bear with TCN as we continue to work with the stakeholders in the value chain to ensure that supply through distribution companies to electricity consumers nationwide improves.
