The 26 power plants in the Nigerian Electricity Sector Industry (NESI) generated an average of 5,076.39 MW of electricity that was available for distribution to consumers through the national grid for November 2023, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported.
The electricity sector regulatory authority said in its latest Operational Performance of Power Plants report for November 2023 that 11 of the power plants generated 80 percent and above of the total 3,167.16GWh of electricity generated during the period.
The power plants, which accounted for a cumulative national installed capacity of 12,199 MW of electricity, included Rivers Independent Power Plant, Omotosho IPP, Olorunshogo IPP, Omotosho NIIPP, Ibom Power, Omoku, Sapele GT NIPP, Paras, Sapele ST, Geregu NIPP, Olorunshogo NIPP Dadin Kowa, Ihovbor NIPP, Afam IV-V, Trans Amadi, Toopex Energy, Egbin ST, Delta GS, Kainji, Odukpani, Shiroro, Jebba, Okpai, Azura IPP and Geregu.
The report, which gave an average hourly generation capacity of 4,398.83Wh/h, disclosed that an average of between 34 and 100 percent of the generated capacity in each of the power plants were available for injection into the national grid
The 11 power plants that generated more than 80 percent of the total energy supply included the 1,320 MW Egbin ST, which generated 403.10GWh, or 90 percent of its installed capacity, 47 percent of which was available.
Others include the 972MW Delta GS, which generated 305.02GWh, or 93 percent, out of which 51 percent was available for distribution, while the 760MW Kainji plant generated 304.50 GWh, or 89 percent, with 62 percent capacity available for distribution.
For 726MW Afam VI, out of about 245.99GWh or 94 percent of electricity generated for the month, 56 percent was available for injection into the national grid, just as 1,383MW Odukpani generated a total of 143.07GHh, or 93 percent, with only 34 percent available for distribution.
Also, the 600MW Shiroro generated 242.44GWh, or 76 percent, with 74 percent available; 578.4MW Jebba – 268.81GWh, or 84 percent, with 78 percent available; 930MW Okpai – 170.74GWh, or 81 percent, with 61 percent available; 1,500MW Azura IPP – 283.18GWh, or 87 percent, with 98 percent available, and 435 MW Geregu – 134.20GWh or 93 percent, with 46 percent available, and 180MW Rivers IPP generated, out of which 79 percent was available for distribution.
Meanwhile, NERC reported that during the period total registered customers in the country stood at 13,112,134, with about 51,631 of them metered, bringing the total number of metered customers to about 5,799,095 and the metering rate of 44.23 percent.
A breakdown of the number of metered customers among the 11 electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) showed that Ibadan DISCO recorded the highest number with 1,029,994 customers, out of 2,378,707 registered customers, followed by Ikeja DISCO with 895,640 customers, out of 1,236,606 registered customers, and Abuja with 849,815 customers, out of a total 1,4906,263 registered customers.
Others included Benin DISCO, which recorded 658,646 metered customers, out of a total registered customers of 1,318,022; Enugu DISCO with 611,511 metered customers out of 1,396,440 registered customers; Port Harcourt DISCO with 489,488 metered customers out of 1,179,194 registered customers; Eko DISCO with 429,056 metered customers out of total registered customers of 734,112, and Jos DISCO with 241,851 metered customers out of 727,712 registered customers.
Also, Kano DISCO recorded 209,825 metered customers from total registered customers of 868,707; Kaduna DISCO had 205,369 metered customers and 862,730 registered customers; Yola DISCO – 125,329 metered customers from 813,031 registered customers, and Aba Power with 52,602 metered customers from 190,610 total registered customers.
