President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of a new Accountant General of the Federation (AGF). She is
Sakirat Oluwatoyin Madein, whose appointment was announced in a statement signed by the president’s director of Communication, Mohammed Ahmed, on Friday, May 19.
The statement reads, “President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Sakirat Oluwatoyin Madein as the substantive Accountant-General of the Federation following the successful conduct of a selection process to fill the existing vacancy.
“The head of the civil service of the federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan, also confirmed the appointment on Friday.
“The appointment is with effect from Thursday, May 18.”
Madein was one of 19 candidates shortlisted for the position since January this year.
Prior to her appointment, Madein served as the director, Finance & Accounts in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
An indigene of Ogun state, Madein, who becomes the first female to occupy that office in the country, holds a Ph.D. in Management Finance from Walden University, Minnesota, USA.
The office became vacant since May 2022 following the arrest of the former occupier, Ahmed Idris, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with the diversion of public funds and money laundering involving over N109 billion.
Idris, who later removed from office by the Federal Government, was arraigned by the anti-graft agency on a 14-count charge of stealing, fraud and criminal breach of trust.
Since Idris’s exit, the Federal Government announced the appointment of Anamekwe Nwabuoku in acting capacity to overseer the affairs of the office till a substantive appointee was named.
