The Magistrates’ Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State on Monday heard how two deaf–mute persons allegedly conspired to abduct and illegally detained their 17-year-old female colleague against her will.
The culprits, Peter Obi, 41, and Ego Njoku, 35, whose addresses were not given were charged by the Police to the court for committing the office.
The prosecution counsel, Oriyomi Akinwale, an Inspector of Police, told the Chief Magistrates’ Court presided by Chief Magistrate Adefumike Anoma that the duo allegedly committed the offence on February 1 this year in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
In the charge against the accused read in court, Mr Akinwale said the suspects abducted their 17-year-old victim, also a deaf-mute, from Auchi, in Edo State, where she had gone to beg for alms and took her to Ekiti State where they detained her against her will for unknown purposes.
The Police counsel said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 27 (2)b of Child Rights Law, Ekiti State, 2012.
But the defendants pleaded not guilty of the crime.
Consequently, their counsel, Michael Olaleye, prayed the court to grant them bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Adefumike Anoma, in her ruling on the bail application thereafter admitted the two accused persons to bail in the sum of N10,000 each, with one surety each in like sum.
The police prosecutor prayed the court to grant the approval for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.
The magistrate consequently adjourned the case until March 22 for continuation of hearing. (NAN)
