As was widely expected, members of the U.S. Electoral college, finally validated the election of former vice-President, Joe Biden, as the 46th president-elect the United States.
The validation process presided by the outgoing Vice President, Mike Pence, is part of the US elections protocol for a president to be elected into office.
The process saw the special delegates meeting at the Congress chamber to recount the electoral college votes announced at the end of the presidential elections last November.
The U.S. Constitution, only states that members cannot be members of Congress or others who currently hold federal office are allowed to belong to the Electoral College.
This year, prominent members of the Electoral College included former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary, who is also the former presidential candidate for the democrats in the 2016 presidential poll. They were selected to represent the Democrats in New York.
At the end, the Congressmen confirmed that president-elect, Joe Biden of the Democratic party clinched the November 2020 presidential election after polling a total of 306 electoral college votes.
The lawmakers said Mr Biden, along with his deputy, Kamala Harris, triumphed over the incumbent president, Donald Trump of the Republican party, who received 232 votes with his vice president, Mike Pence.
Under the US electoral system, a candidate in a presidential election must garner a minimum of 270 electoral votes from the 50 States to be declared the winner of the election.
But Mr Biden’s emergence Wednesday did not come on a platter of gold, as protesters sympathetic to the incumbent president, Donald Trump, attempted to disrupt the process and abort the peaceful conclusion of the election.
Since the conclusion of the election in November, President Trump and his supporters continued to denounce its outcome, alleging massive fraud, without providing any credible evidence.
With the validated result, all appears set for Mr Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021 as the 46th U.S President.
