After months of suspense and speculation about the circumstances of the unfortunate death of Keren Akpagher, the autopsy examination report by authorities of the Nigeria Police has confirmed the14-year-old senior secondary (SSS 1) student  of Premiere Academy, Abuja, died of complications from diabetes mellitus.
The untimely death of the student on 21 June, 2021 stirred massive controversies on the circumstances surrounding her demise.
While some civil society and child rights groups alleged the student died as a result of complications from alleged serial rape, the school authorities blamed the sad situation on suspected mismanagement of her delicate health condition.
Late Keren was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes mellitus, a medical condition that required insulin injection twice daily and a regular monitoring of her blood sugar for her to survive.
Following her demise, the Nigeria Police appointed a consultant pathologist, Dr Desmond Ike Okonkwo, the principal pathologist at the Maitama General Hospital, Abuja to conduct an autopsy examination on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 to ascertain the real cause of her death.
conducted releasing the following statement in line with its avowed commitment to keep all its stakeholders informed on the developments as they regard to the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death of Miss Keren Akpagher, who until her unfortunate passing on 21 June, 2021, was a Senior Secondary Class 1 (SS1) student of the school.

The authorities of Premiere Academy said on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, the Police invited them and the family of the late student for a formal briefing on the outcome of the report of the autopsy examination conducted on the deceased

At the briefing, the Deputy Commissioner of Police and the head of the investigation team in charge of the late student’s case, Fom Pam Joseph, said the autopsy report revealed that the late Miss Keren Akpagher died of hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar), a complication arising from diabetes mellitus.
Joseph said the report further revealed that no disease was observed in any part of the deceased body.
In its reaction to the report, the Premiere Academy said: “While the findings of the autopsy, as contained in the interim report, are consistent with our position that the Late Keren Akpagher may have died from the mismanagement of her diabetic condition, the report is at variance with the claims in some quarters, including the family, that the late student died of sepsis, arising from infection caused by ‘decayed’ condom left in her uterus.”
Describing the report as interim, Joseph said the final report would only be due after the police investigation team has completed a DNA test on the substance the doctor at Queens Clinic Abuja claimed to have recovered from the Late Miss Keren Akpagher private part prior to her death.
The police said a more detailed information would be contained in the final autopsy report when it is out.
Urging the public to patiently await the final report of the autopsy examination, the school authorities called on all nterest groups to be cautious in dealing with this new information.

“Our heart still goes to the family, friends and well-wishers of our dear late student, Miss Keren Akpagher, who are still battling to contain the shock that her death must have caused them. We pray that God comforts us all. We also pray that God, in His mercy, grants her soul an eternal rest in His paradise,” the school said in statement on Monday in Abuja.
