The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Tuesday reported the collapse of nine electricity transmission towers in Ogun State.
The nine towers, from
56 to 65, are located in the Obafemi Owode area, along the Papalanto/Abeokuta 132KV transmission line in Ogun State
The TCN said the collapse of the nine transmission towers was traced to the illegal activities of vandals in the area.
The General Manager (Transmission) Lagos Region, Mojeed Akintola, is quoted to have said that the towers that collapsed were discovered on Monday following the tripping off of electricity supply in the area.
The disruption in electricity in the area compelled a team of engineers to be dispatched to undertake an inspection of the transmission line to trace where the fault occurred.
Findings during the inspection Akinola said revealed the collapse of the giant transmission towers, which has plunged Abeokuta and environs into darkness.
Following the collapse, normal supply of electricity to Abeokuta and environs has been disrupted, as the company is making efforts to restore power supply bulk electricity through an alternate line, to enable Ibadan DisCo distribute electricity to its customers whose supply was affected by the incident.
The GM condemned the activities of vandals, pointing out that their nefarious acts were negatively impacting the ongoing grid expansion programme of the company.
He lamented that the resources that would have been used to further improve the grid infrastructure in Ogun State would now be used to replace the vandalised transmission towers.
The Manager appealed to host communities to work with the TaCN to protect the country’s common national assets.
