The Akwa Ibom State government is galvanizing support back home for Nigeria’s triumph over Morocco as the Super Eagles prepare to clash with the Atlas Lions in the highly anticipated explosive second semi-final match of the ongoing African Cup of Nation 2025 on Wednesday.
To give residents in the State the opportunity of watching the match billed for 9 pm Nigerian time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, the state government has ordered the refurbishing of the popular entertainment hotspot in the capital city, the Ibom Plaza, in Uyo and made conducive for football lovers.
The place is not only beautifully decorated, it has severàl high-definition giant television screens installed to enable the proceedings of the match to be relayed to hundreds of Akwa Ibom viewers expected to throng the place on Wednesday to cheer their beloved Super Eagles to victory.
The State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, said Governor Umo Eno was so delighted with the superlative performance of the Super Eagles during their last game against the Desert Warriors of Algeria that the team was bound to take Nigeria’s national flag to the final.
“Don’t forget that Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom is the home of the Super Eagles. Hence the emotional and patriotic attachment to the team by the people and government. The governor was so impressed by the huge crowd which turned up at the remodeled Ibom Plaza in Uyo to cheer the team to victory, a match the Super Eagles trounced their opponents convincingly by two unreplied goals
The Commissioner said Wednesday promises to be a different ball game as the comfort that Ibom Plaza offers, with the high definition giant screen televisions and the lively and electrifying ambience that the venue will provide will see hundreds turn up to cheer the National team to victory.
“In an environment of epileptic power supply, limited capacity to acquire a satellite television service provider and most importantly, the ambience surrounding the watching of live matches in the company of other Nigerians, has made Ibom Plaza “the talk of the town” as regards impactful social projects commissioned by the state government to the advantage of our sports loving indigenes of the State.
“Let me add again that most of those who will come out tomorrow do have television sets and generators in their houses, yet they will prefer to come out and watch the match at the upgraded facility alongside other indigenes of the State.This will give spark and add verve to the experience ” the Commissioner said.
He said the turn out of the people for tomorrow’s match will once again crown
sports as the ultimate vehicle for
the propagation of unity and peace, as well as a leveler when it comes to divisive issues like religion, ethnicity and tribe.
