Ahead of theConference of the Parties (COP 28), Agora Policy and its partners will host key stakeholders to a policy dialogue to chart the way forward for Nigeria’s participation at the conference scheduled for Dubai, United Arab Emirates between November 30 and December 12, 2023.
The pre-conference dialogue on the theme: “Nigeria, Climate Change, and the Green Economy”, is billed for Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at the main auditorium of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
Organisers said the High level event is in partnership with the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation, The Cable Newspapers, The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), Clean Technology Hub, Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD), and Nature News.
The event will feature a policy-facing dissection of the risks and opportunities that climate change, the energy transition and the green economy present to Nigeria, which is grappling with the mounting challenges of changing climatic conditions in the world.
The highpoint of the event will be the public presentation of Agora Policy’s latest policy report, “Climate Change and Socio-Economic Development in Nigeria”, produced with the support of the MacArthur Foundation, the primary sponsor of the policy conversation.
The Chief Executive of Agora Policy, Waziri Adio, said on Tuesday in Abuja that the special report would highlight the different channels through which adverse effects of climate change could worsen in Nigeria and further compound the country’s developmental challenges.
Adio said the report would also point out the opportunities for Nigeria to foster rapid economic growth, diversify its energy sources, generate employment for its burgeoning youthful and urbanising populace, and address pervasive poverty and inequality through an equitable energy transition.
“The presentation of the report will be followed by a policy conversation among stakeholders critical to climate action and the operation of a green economy in the country,” Adio added.
He listed the panellists at the policy conversation to include the Chief Executive Officer, Sterling Bank, Abubakar Suleiman; Director-General, the National Council on Climate Change, Salisu Dahiru; Programme Officer, Ford Foundation, Olufunke Baruwa, and Senior Officer, the Natural Resource Governance Institute, Tengi George-Ikoli.
The panel would be moderated by the Director of Public Policy Initiatives at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation, Amara Nwankpa,
The panel session would be followed by an interactive session where key stakeholders would share diverse perspectives on what Nigeria needs to do to strengthen its resilience to climate change and its transition to a greener economy.
