Stakeholders in the consumer protection sector of the economy are to converge on Abuja for the 7th World Consumer Rights Day 2025.
The Save the Consumers Initiative (SCI) conference would provide the forum for participants to chart the way forward for transparent dealings through open terms and conditions of products and services that consumers can interpret before embarking on service.
The World Consumer Rights Day celebrated on the 15th of March annually on the theme:“Transparency, responsible consumption”, would be geared towards raising awareness on consumer rights, protection, and empowerment.
A statement signed by the Executive Director, Save the Consumers Initiative, Aliyu Ilias, said the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Tunji Bello, would deliver the keynote paper, while the Director General of the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, would be special guest, alongside Director-General of National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Moji Adeyeye.
The event, to be held on March 14, 2025, Novare Mall Wuse zone 6, beside PDP Secretariat, “is part of Save the Consumers Initiative’s effort to expand the frontiers of the fight against fake and substandard products that is doing enormous damage to Nigerian consumers who are constantly at the receiving end of bad services and consumption of substandard products.
“The conference will present an opportunity for regulatory bodies in the country to explain their level of mediation between the users of services, product and the producer of goods and services.
“A case in hand is the fake pharmaceutical product among other substandard products Nigeria consume daily, there is the need to put a stop to it and it is a collective responsibility.
“The consumer should also endeavour to consumer responsibly by double checking the authenticity of product and services through the regulatory bodies. There must be a window of effective communication between the consumers and regulatory bodies in Nigeria. Nigeria must be informed adequately on the standards and qualities of goods and services in Nigeria.” Ilias said.
