The second edition of the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop for journalists organised by the Nigeria LNG Limited was held after eight years.
The first edition of the workshop aimed at enhancing the digital communication and social media skills of media practitioners was held since 2015.
“The first #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop was held in 2015, after which there was a hiatus,” the organisers said in a statement. They did not give further clarifications.
But the statement said the workshop, which spanned three days, brought together over 20 journalists from various editorial sections of the media.
The annual capacity-building workshop, organised in collaboration with The Journalism Clinic, a media training institution,
the statement said, also focused on mobile and multimedia journalism.
During the closing ceremony last Thursday, the General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, Andy Odeh, said the initiative was born out of a vision conceived in 2015 to equip journalists with the necessary tools and skills to navigate the ever-changing landscape of digital communication and social media.
Odeh said NLNG’s recognition of the significance of embracing new technologies and platforms to effectively convey stories that resonate with the Nigerian populace in today’s fast-paced digital age.
“The driving force behind this workshop lies in our firm belief that our stakeholders are not just partners in our current success. Media practitioners are an integral part of our journey towards greater heights. At Nigeria LNG, we understand that our growth and success are intricately linked to the growth and success of those around us, including journalists. We aim to create a symbiotic relationship where both parties thrive together,” Odeh said.
He further elaborated on NLNG’s commitment to capacity building, expressing the Company’s profound belief in the immense potential of its stakeholders.
Recognising the pivotal role journalists play in shaping narratives and influencing public opinion, he said NLNG sought to empower them by providing the necessary skills to change their own stories and, consequently, shape the nation’s stories.
To deliver this workshop, he said NLNG collaborated with renowned journalist, Dan Mason and partnered with The Journalism Clinic, led by Taiwo Obe.
These experts, he said, shared their wealth of knowledge and experience and guided participants through the intricacies of digital communication and social media.
The annual workshop, which resumed in 2021 after the initial take off in 2015, has trained over 70 journalists, reinforcing their digital communication and social media competencies.
“The #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop has undoubtedly contributed to empowering journalists, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving digital era. NLNG’s dedication to capacity building remains steadfast, reinforcing its commitment to the growth and success of its stakeholders and the nation,” Odeh said.
NLNG is owned by four Shareholders, namely, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (49%), Shell Gas B.V. (25.6%), TotalEnergies Gaz & Electricite Holdings (15%), and Eni International N.A. N. V. S.àr.l (10.4%).
