As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, the upstream petroleum industry regulatory, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) distributed relief materials to flood victims in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The Head, NUPRC Eket Office, Etukudoh Williams, who distributed the relief materials on Tuesday, said property worth millions of naira was destroyed during the incident.
Williams said the Commission’s management and Chief Executive Gbenga Komolafe, approved a token for all the flood-impacted communities to help cushion the impact of the flood on the victims.
The relief materials presented to the victims included mattresses, blankets and some food stuff like rice, and groundnut oil, among others.
He listed the beneficiary local government areas as Eket, Eastern Obolo, Mbo, Ibeno, Ikot Abasi and Nsit Ibom.
“As we are all aware, the past few months have been difficult for many in the flood-affected communities of the state. There have been mixed feelings, despair, and uncertainty in the minds of the flood victims, especially during yuletide when we were all celebrating in our homes with our families.
“Many have been dislodged in various parts of the country as well as in our communities here in Akwa Ibom, property and means of livelihood had been destroyed due to the ravaging impact of the flood,” Williams said.
He explained that the relief materials would also help to put smiles on the faces of the people in difficult times.
The NUPRC Head thanked the Federal Government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and organised private sector for the support and assistance to the affected communities, adding that more still needs to be done to ameliorate the suffering of the victims.
Williams gave the assurance that the Federal Government would continue to support the host communities.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, Joshua Afia, commended the Commission for the laudable gesture to the affected communities, and promised that the relief materials would be shared judiciously to the victims.
Also, the Chairman of Eastern Obolo Local Government Area, Abraham Odion, thanked the Federal Government for the gesture and called on the Commission to donate more relief materials to cushion the effects of the flood victims in the communities.
“We are really happy for what the commission has done for us, we want to use this opportunity to appreciate the Federal Government for identifying with the plight of rural and riverine areas affected by the flood,” Odion said. (NAN)
