The world is mourning, as Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth, has died, after over 70 years reign.

The death of the queen, aged 96, was announced on Thursday by her eldest son, Charle, who has since emerged as the new King of England.

“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother,” Charles announced in a statement.

Earlier on Thursday, reports said the queen’s doctors had told close family members of her fast-deteriorating health and the need for her close medical supervision.

Few hours later, the queen was said to have died peacefully at her Scottish estate, Balmoral home.

One of the early visitors to commiserate with the family was the newly appointed Prime Minister, Liz Truss, who was appointed by the Queen on Tuesday.

The BBC reported that The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby – spiritual leader to the Church of England of which the monarch is supreme governor – also expressed his “profound sadness” over the passage of the monarch.

Born in Mayfair, London, on April 21, 1926 as Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, The Queen was crowned at Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953, at 27.

World leaders have paid tributes to the Queen, among them the U.S. President, Joe Biden, his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, and Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau.

State burial for the Queen is expected in a fortnight, bringing to an end another golden era in the British monarchy.
