The power sector is on a fast track to deliver efficient and effective services to electricity consumers, Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, has said.
The Minister was speaking on Thursday in Abuja at the formal inauguration of the Board of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
Aliyu urged the board members to execute their assignment with all the seriousness it deserves, bringing their wealth of experience to bear on decisions at board meetings.
The Minister reminded members of the Board about their key responsibility in overseeing the strategic direction of TCN within the context of the policies of the Federal Government in the power sector.
Urging them to speak and act within and outside the Boardroom with one voice, the
Minister said the Board should help the power sector keep its promise to deliver efficient and effective services to Nigerians.
“Members of the Board were selected based on their competence, expertise and wealth of experience. They are suitably qualified and worthy of our nation’s Power Sector value-chain. The Power Sector is on a fast track to deliver efficient and effective service to Nigerians. I implore you to see that this comes to bear,” he charged them.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Power, Gabriel Suswan, advised the Board members to work in synergy with the Ministry of Power to ensure the current challenges experienced in the power supply in the country was adequately addressed and put to the barest minimum.
The Chairman thanked President Mohammadu Buhari for the confidence reposed in the Board, by giving them the opportunity to serve the general public in this capacity.
He assured the President and the general public that they would live up to their expectations.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Nebeolisa Anako, who was represented by the Director overseeing the office, Tayo Adewumi, urged the Board members to work towards increasing the transmission wheeling capacity in the country.
Noting that this was very dear to the President, as one of his major cardinal agenda of his administration, the Permanent Secretary said the TCN was occupying a very important place in the power sector value-chain, as it performs not only as the transmission system provider, but also as independent system operators.
“To successfully execute these tasks, the role of a functional Board cannot be over emphasized,’’ he said.
Members of the governing board include Bukar Bulama Buni, as Chairman, with the Managing Director, TCN, Sule Abdulazeez, as member. –
Others include Appolonia Okigbo, member representing South-East; Ahmad Talba Imamuddeen (North-East); Clement Omeizabaiye (North-Central); Muhammad A. Wazaram (North-East); Abdul Karim Babatunde Disu (South-West); Osagie Ediale (South-East); Gazalli Tukur (North-West); Nsima Ekere (South-South); Ali Haruna (North-West) and Nosike E. N. representing the Federal Ministry of Power as well as Aisha Omar, representative of Federal Ministry of Finance. The Director General, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Alex Okoh, is also a member of the Board.
