To bring up to date its operational systems, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced the full digitization of all its old transmission substations in its network.
The transmission company said the digitization project was aimed at improving the automation system of old transmission substations and ensure their connectivity with a more modern SCADA System being proposed across the country.
The spokesperson of TCN, Ndidi Mbah, said in Abuja that the scope of the upgrade work for the project would include the supply, installation, configuration, testing, commissioning of Substation Automation Systems (SAS).
Mbah said the project would also cover the control and relay protection systems in the substations in the affected areas
This project, she explained, would further contribute to the overall grid management aimed at reducing system losses.
She said the digitization project was funded by the World Bank under NETAP (Nigerian Electricity Transmission Project), managed by the Project Management Unit of TCN.
In Port-Harcourt Region alone, she identified five substations that would be digitized, including Afam 1, Ahoada, Yenegoa, Owerri, and Uyo substations.
Already, Mbah said a team from TCN-PMU and the General Manager (Transmission) Port-Harcourt Region, formally handed the duly executed document on the digtization project to the contractor at the Afam 1 substation.
The handing over of the documents marked the formal beginning of the digitization process for TCNs old substations.
