TCN appeals for calm amid darkness nationwide, following fresh systems collapse

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Wednesday appealed to electricity consumers to remain while iys officials work to recover a total system collapse of the national grid which it confirmed occured at about 11.01 am, May 12, 2021.
Spokesperson of the TCN, Ndidi Mba said the collapse was as a result of voltage crash at some parts of the grid.
Mba assured that TCN immediately commenced the recovery of the grid from Shiroro Generating Station to Katampe Transmission Station; Abuja through the Shiroro – Katampe line at 11:29 am, and also through Delta Generating Station to Benin Transmission Substation, reaching Osogbo and parts of Lagos.
“While the grid restoration and power restoration gradually progress to other parts of the country, the cause of voltage collapse that precipitated this failure is equally being investigated,” Mba said.
“TCN appeals for patience as it works assiduously to ensure full restoration of the grid and consequently power supply to the remaining parts of the country,” she added.
Systems collapse, which is breakdown in the ability of the power transmission sysyem to transmit generated electricity for distribution to consumers, has been a recurring phenomenon in recent times.
In 2019, the national electricity grid recorded more than 12 systems collapse, which worsened the power supply across the country.
Although the situation improved in 2020, with about five systems collapse reported during the year, the situation appears to be deteriorating this year as the nation has so far, experienced about four systems collapse 89 since the year began.
