President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday sent Abdulrasheed Bawa to the Senate as designate for confirmation as substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The President’s request was contained in a letter addressed to the President of Senate, Ahmad Lawan and read at plenary on Tuesday.
The letter was entitled: “Request for confirmation of appointment of Chairman, Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
The letter reads: “Dear Distinguish Senate President
“In accordance with Paragraph 2(2) of Part1, CAP E1 of EFCC Act 2004.
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Abdulrasheed Bawa as Chairman of the EFCC, the curriculum vitae of the nominee is attached herewith.
“While I trust that the distinguish Senate will consider this request in the usual expeditious manner, please accept distinguish Senate President the assurances of my highest consideration,” the President said.
Mr Lawan in his remark said the screening of the EFCC Chairman designate would be done at plenary in line with the tradition of the Senate.
If confirmed, Mr Bawa would succeed Ibrahim Magu who was the acting Chairman of the anti-graft agency fore five years until July 2020 when he was suspended indefinitely from office.
His removal followed the recommendation by a panel constituted by the government to investigate allegations of corruption against him-
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami had accused him of diverting proceeds of the government assets recovered from politicians and public officials accused of corruption.
Prior to his removal, Mr Magu was rejected on two occasions by the 8th Senate when his nomination was presented for confirmation.
His rejection after five years of acting as EFCC Chairman followed unfavourable security reports from security agencies against his confirmation.
